Lapérouse, a citizen of the world

Jean-Francois de Galaup de Lapérouse is one of the famous Albigensians, born in 1741 in the manor of Gô. Louis XVI appreciated the human qualities and seamanship talents of this young captain. He entrusts him with the great expedition of the reign with two frigates Function and l'astrolabe. 225 men, sailors, scholars and artists set off from Brest in 1785, sailed along Brazil, Chile, Alaska, California, China, Russia, Australia... and ran aground at Vanikoro (Solomon Islands) in the Pacific in 1788. During this trip, he carried out precise and valuable work on cartography and scientific research.

The Lapérouse museum is not only the story of a man but a great page in the maritime history of the end of the XNUMXth century and an invitation to take part in the mysteries which still remain.

A museum for all audiences

The museum is intended for a wide audience, for lovers of history, exploration and maritime history. are exposed weapons, uniforms, navigational instruments as well as models which constitute an additional attraction, in particular that of Vanikoro (the Shipwreck Island), Brest in the XNUMXth century and the beautiful model of the Compass, Lapérouse's flagship.

During a family visit, an educational game booklet is offered to each child. Discovering then becomes a game.

The City of Albi is carrying out an ambitious project in memory of the Albigensian navigator Lapérouse and around the values ​​of his expedition sponsored by Louis XVI.
