Tuesday July 23 at 10:30 p.m.
Tourist information office Le Bourg 81430 Ambialet
This summer, the Tarn Valley and Albigeois Mountains Tourist Office in partnership with AGIT invites you to discover the Ambialet peninsula through a guided tour with a guide speaker. Reservation required (limited places)
Meeting point: in front of the Ambialet Tourist Office (village center). Walking shoes strongly recommended. Estimated duration of 2 hours. Cancellation in case of bad weather conditions.
Walking through the alleys of the village and going up the unusual open-air Stations of the Cross you will be amazed by the history of this medieval “Castela”, a unique site, nestled in a meander of the Tarn: its dam, its notched huts, its priory, its Romanesque chapel and its Saint-Gilles church (11th century).
When you reach the top of the promontory, you can admire the magnificent panoramic view of the isthmus, the upper parts of Ambialet and the ruins of the castle of Trencavel.
Wandering around the summit, you find the "Auder", an evergreen tree, which according to legend was brought from the Holy Land by a Crusader.
The visit continues with the discovery of the cloister of the Priory which is open to the public exceptionally during this visit.
The cloister, a former Benedictine monastery dating from 1057, now houses the American University of Saint Francis of Loretto in Pennsylvania. Adjoining the cloister, you will discover the Notre-Dame de l'Auder chapel, a gem of Romanesque art from the XNUMXth century.
Going down you enter the church of St Gilles dating from the XNUMXth century which hosts very beautiful painting exhibitions every summer.
