Description

The most beautiful isthmus of France
Élisée Reclus, a XNUMXth century Aquitaine geographer, was the first to consider the meander of the Tarn at Ambialet as “the most beautiful isthmus in France”. The original qualifiers have never been lacking to enhance a site whose remarkable position has been worth supporting both the architectural imprint of feudal power and that of religious authority. We still admire today the remains of the fortress of the viscounts of Albi and a living priory which houses the admirable Romanesque sanctuary of Notre-Dame de la Voute (XNUMXth century). Tradition has it that a Crusader from the East brought back a kind of arbutus there (Aladern in Occitant) whose name was given to the site. It is, in fact, a type of heath common in the region. The name sounds good and suits the landscape.
