The story
On a trip to Nagasaki, Pinkerton lightly enters into a marriage contract with Butterfly, a geisha. But the union is disapproved of by Consul Sharpless as much as by the girl's family. The years pass and Butterfly remains faithful to her American husband, refusing to admit that he could have forgotten her.
